GPA Exemption Information
GPA Exemptions | Please read before you request an exemptionExemption forms are completed via a Google Doc which is emailed to all Junior and Senior students the third week of each semester.
At Kennedale High School, we encourage all students to pursue their area of special talents and interests to enrich their academic experiences and achievements. The GPA exemptions allow a student to exempt up to two courses per semester during their Junior and Senior year. We believe this will foster continued and increased involvement in extra-curricular programs and ensure that all of our students have access to a well-rounded education. Please read the GPA Exemption Letter below which will give additional information and guidelines.
While the GPA exemption form is an option for ALL junior and senior students, it is best utilized by students that have a GPA of 4.0 or above. Students may not exempt from any core academic classes (first four classes of English, Math, Science, or Social Studies). The goal of a student exempting an elective course(s) is that involvement in a program or course does not negatively affect a student's overall GPA. Below are some examples to help:
Example 1 - Reason to Exempt: Senior student has a GPA of 4.2 and the student is enrolled in Athletics (or Band, or Theatre, or any other elective). The highest grade that a student can earn in that course is a 100 which is equivalent to a 4.0. That grade will negatively affect the student's GPA, therefore the student should exempt from the course.
Example 2 - Reason to Not Exempt: Senior student has a GPA of 3.7 and the student is enrolled in Athletics (or Band, or Theatre, or any other elective). The grade that student is working to earn is a 100 which is equivalent to a 4.0. Therefore, that grade would be beneficial to the student's GPA and the student should not exempt from the course.
